Ghunsa acclimatisation hike and gompa

On the rest day in Ghunsa at 3,595 m, hike several hundred metres above the village for acclimatisation and views, then visit the gompa and walk through the stone-built Sherpa settlement in the afternoon.

Ghunsa is a Sherpa village of stone houses with wooden shutters, set on flat ground beside the Ghunsa Khola among larch, juniper and rhododendron. It is the last permanent settlement before the high pastures, and its health post, police check point and handful of shops make it the main hub of the north route. Everyone spends two nights here.

In the morning we climb the hillside above the village, gaining about 400 to 500 m towards a viewpoint, depending on how the group feels. The principle is to climb high and sleep low: the short spell at around 4,000 m helps the body adjust before the move to Kambachen. On clear days the view stretches up the valley towards Jannu's flanks.

Back in the village for lunch, the afternoon is for rest, laundry and a visit to the small gompa, where a caretaker can usually open the prayer hall. Evenings in the lodge dining rooms are warm around the stove, a good time to dry boots and talk with other trekking groups.

Questions travellers ask

Why do treks rest at Ghunsa?

Ghunsa is at 3,595 m, and the next stops, Kambachen at about 4,050 m and Lhonak at about 4,785 m, gain height quickly. A rest day with a short climb helps your body adjust and lowers the risk of altitude sickness.

Can I buy supplies in Ghunsa?

There are small shops with snacks, toilet paper, batteries and some trekking gear, at much higher prices than in Phungling. Do not count on finding specific items.

Is there phone signal at Ghunsa?

Coverage is patchy and changes year to year. Some lodges offer paid Wi-Fi when the connection works. Our guides carry a satellite communicator for emergencies.
