Dawn birding walk on the Koshi embankment

Walk the raised flood embankment and pond edges at sunrise with a naturalist, scanning the marshes and river channels for ducks, storks, raptors and grassland specialities as the mist lifts.

  • 3–4 hours
  • Sunrise, Nov–Mar
  • Included at birding camps

The eastern embankment of the Koshi runs for kilometres along the edge of the reserve, giving a raised view over marshes, grassland and river channels. We set off at first light with a naturalist guide and a spotting scope, walking slowly and stopping often. In December and January the early mist can hang until 9 a.m., and birds appear and disappear in it.

Typical sightings include several species of ducks and geese, purple swamphen, black-necked and Asian openbill storks, egrets, herons, kingfishers, harriers quartering the grass and eagles on dead trees. A good naturalist will also pick out skulkers by call, such as the swamp francolin, and the many warblers in the reeds. Wild water buffalo may graze within sight.

We return to camp for a late breakfast. The walk is flat and easy, about 4–6 km in total. Serious birders can extend it into the afternoon, while families may prefer a shorter version followed by time in the camp hide.

Questions travellers ask

How many bird species are found at Koshi Tappu?

Several hundred species have been recorded in and around the reserve and Koshi Barrage, making it one of the richest birding sites in Nepal. A good winter trip of three days often logs more than 150 species.

Do I need my own binoculars?

Bring your own if you can, ideally 8x42 or 10x42. Camps and guides usually have a few spare pairs and a spotting scope to share, but not enough for a whole group.

Is Koshi Tappu good for beginners in birding?

Yes. The birds are large and easy to see on open water and grass, and a naturalist helps with identification. Many visitors with no birding background enjoy it as much as experts.
