At 5,164 m you are above roughly half of the Earth's atmosphere, and in October and November the air over the Khumbu is often very dry and still after dark. With no towns for days in any direction, Gorak Shep is one of the darkest places most people will ever stand. On a moonless night, the Milky Way is bright enough to cast faint shadows, and the black outlines of Pumori, Kala Patthar and Nuptse frame it.
You do not need to go far: a few metres from the lodge door is enough. Turn off your headlamp or switch it to red light and give your eyes 10 minutes to adjust. Planets, star clusters and satellites are easy to spot. Photographers with a tripod and a wide-angle lens can capture the Milky Way over Pumori with exposures of 15–20 seconds, but keep camera batteries warm in a pocket until the last moment.
It is extremely cold after dark, often −15 °C or lower with wind, so wear your full down layers, hat and gloves and do not stay out long. Never walk far from the lodges at night, and avoid the moraine edges. Because you will be up early for Kala Patthar, 20–30 minutes is plenty. The pre-dawn start for the climb also gives another chance to see the stars, as you cross the lake bed by headlamp.

Questions travellers ask
Is Gorak Shep good for night photography?
Yes, on clear, moonless nights it is excellent. Dry thin air and no light pollution give very sharp stars. Bring a tripod, a wide lens and spare batteries kept warm. Expect −15 °C or colder, so limit time outside.
When is the best time for stargazing on the EBC trek?
Clear, moonless nights from October to December are best, when the air is dry and settled. Check the moon phase before you book if stars matter to you. Spring nights can be hazier, and monsoon nights are usually cloudy.
Is it safe to go outside at night in Gorak Shep?
Yes, close to the lodges, dressed warmly and with a headlamp. Do not wander onto the moraine or lake bed alone in the dark. If you feel dizzy or unusually breathless, go back inside and tell your guide.
