A heli return makes sense for trekkers short of time, those who want to finish on a high, and anyone feeling the altitude after Kala Patthar. After the sunrise climb, you return to Gorak Shep for breakfast while your guide confirms the flight by radio or satellite phone. The helicopter usually arrives between 7 and 10 am, when the weather is clearest. Bags are weighed, because the payload at 5,164 m is limited.
At this altitude a typical AS350 B3 helicopter can safely lift only two or three passengers with luggage, depending on temperature and wind. Groups of four or five may be flown in two shuttles to Pheriche or Lukla, then combined for the leg to Kathmandu. The flight down the Khumbu passes the Thukla memorials, Pheriche, Ama Dablam, Pangboche and Tengboche, then the Dudh Koshi gorge and Namche Bazaar, with a refuelling stop at Lukla.
From Lukla to Kathmandu takes about 45–50 minutes, landing at the domestic terminal of Tribhuvan airport. If cloud or wind prevents flying, you wait at Gorak Shep or walk down to Pheriche and fly from there the next morning. Shared seats are cheaper but depend on filling the helicopter. Your guide and porters usually walk out to Lukla, so settle tips before the flight.

Questions travellers ask
How much is a helicopter from Gorak Shep to Kathmandu?
A shared seat often costs around US$ 600–900 per person, depending on season, fuel prices and how many seats are filled. A private charter for the whole helicopter costs considerably more. Check current rates before you travel.
Can all my group fly together from Gorak Shep?
Often not in one go. At 5,164 m helicopters carry fewer people, usually two or three with bags. Groups are shuttled to Pheriche or Lukla first, then fly together to Kathmandu. Allow extra time on the morning of the flight.
What happens if the weather is bad for my heli return?
You wait until conditions improve, usually the next morning, or walk down to Pheriche or Dingboche and fly from there. We build a spare day into heli-return itineraries for this reason. Never fly in poor visibility to save a day.
