Tengboche faces up the Imja valley, which runs north-east towards Everest. At dawn the sun rises behind the high peaks, so the summits catch the first light while the valley is still in shadow. Everest's pyramid turns gold first, then the Lhotse face, then the sharp ridges of Ama Dablam (6,812 m) to the right. Kangtega and Thamserku behind you glow pink a few minutes later. On still mornings, smoke from lodge kitchens and the monastery's juniper burner hangs in the valley below.
The best spots are the open meadow north of the monastery gate, the small rise beside the chortens, and the trail just above the lodges towards Deboche. You need only a few minutes' walk from any lodge. Bring a down jacket, hat and gloves: in October and November the temperature at dawn is often around −5 to −8 °C, and colder in winter. Tea at the bakery or your lodge kitchen afterwards is part of the ritual.
For photographers, a standard zoom covers Ama Dablam and the monastery together, and a short telephoto picks out Everest's summit plume. Mornings are reliably clearer than afternoons in the trekking seasons, when cloud often fills the valley by noon. Even if you are not a photographer, it is worth getting up: this is the view many people remember best from the whole trek, and the next morning you will already be beyond it.

Questions travellers ask
Can you see Everest from Tengboche?
Yes. On a clear day you see the summit of Everest rising behind the Nuptse–Lhotse ridge at the head of the valley, with Ama Dablam to the right. Early morning gives the best chance, as cloud often builds after midday in the trekking seasons.
How cold is Tengboche at sunrise?
In October and November dawn temperatures are typically around −5 to −8 °C, colder in December and January, and near freezing in April and May. Wear a down jacket, hat and gloves, and wait for the sun to reach the meadow before taking them off.
What time is sunrise at Tengboche?
In October and November, first light on Everest comes at roughly 5:45 to 6:15 am, and the sun reaches the monastery a little later. In April and May it is around 5:15 to 5:45 am. Ask your lodge the evening before.
