Mountain bike ride from the Nagarkot ridge

A guided mountain-bike ride on the dirt roads and trails around Nagarkot: an easy ridge loop through villages and forest, or a longer descent of nearly 800 m to Bhaktapur, on good bikes with helmets brought up from Kathmandu and a support car following for tired legs.

  • 3–5 hours
  • Morning, Oct–Apr
  • ≈ ₹4,500 per person with bike, guide and support car

The Nagarkot ridge is laced with dirt roads linking farming villages, and most of them see more buffalo than vehicles. That makes it good riding country for mixed-ability groups. We bring hardtail mountain bikes with front suspension, helmets and gloves from a Kathmandu bike outfitter, fit them at your hotel after breakfast and run through gears, brakes and the plan for the day. A guide rides with you, and a support car follows on the road sections with water, snacks, a spare bike and room for anyone who wants to stop.

The shorter option is a 3-hour loop of about 20 km along the ridge and through villages south of the bazaar, with gentle climbs, Himalayan views when the sky is clear and tea in a village shop. Fitter riders take the long descent to Bhaktapur: about 25 km and nearly 800 m of height loss via Telkot and Changunarayan, on dirt tracks and short sections of trail, finishing with a roll into Bhaktapur's old town for lunch. Some climbs remain, but gravity does most of the work.

You need to be comfortable on a bike and on loose surfaces, though you do not need to be an expert. We accept riders from 12 for the loop and 14 for the descent, and children must already be confident cyclists. October to April is the season, since monsoon rain turns the tracks to mud and makes descents slippery. Wear long trousers or padded shorts, closed shoes and sunglasses against the dust, and carry a light jacket, because winter mornings on the ridge start near freezing.

Questions travellers ask

Do I need cycling experience for the Nagarkot bike ride?

You need to ride confidently and handle loose gravel, but you do not need technical mountain-bike skills. The ridge loop suits most regular cyclists, while the descent to Bhaktapur has steep, rough sections better suited to riders with some off-road experience. The guide sets the pace, and the support car is always close by.

What bikes and safety gear are provided?

We bring well-maintained hardtail mountain bikes with front suspension and disc brakes, plus helmets and gloves, from an established Kathmandu outfitter. Bikes are adjusted to your height before you start, and you are welcome to bring your own pedals or saddle. A first-aid kit and basic repair tools travel in the support car.

When is the best season to cycle around Nagarkot?

October to April. Autumn brings the clearest mountain views and dry tracks, winter mornings are cold but bright, and March and April are warm with flowering rhododendrons and some haze. From June to September monsoon rain turns the dirt roads to mud, and we usually suggest a walk instead of a ride.
