January is the coldest month, with dry air and long clear views. The low treks are excellent: Chisapani and the Shivapuri hills face Langtang Lirung and Ganesh Himal, and Helambu's villages are sunny by day. The Langtang Valley is possible with good gear, but Kyanjin Gompa drops well below freezing at night and snow can block the trail above Langtang village. Gosaikunda is usually frozen and snowbound, and the route to Laurebina La is not advised.
Kyanjin Gompa −14 to 4 °C, Chisapani −2 to 12 °C, dry and clear. Conditions change fast with altitude, so check the mountain forecast a few days before you travel.
Good choices this month: Chisapani Nagarkot Trek via Shivapuri 3 Days, Helambu Trek 5 Days from Kathmandu, Langtang Heli Tour with Kyanjin Landing 1 Day, Langtang Valley Trek 8 Days. Pack a −15 °C sleeping bag for any January night above 3,000 m, as lodge rooms are unheated.
A heli tour, a base camp trek, a temple circuit or a slow week in Pokhara. We send a day-by-day plan with every hotel, flight and permit priced in rupees or dollars, usually within one working day.
