Dhunche

Rasuwa's hill headquarters and the trailhead for Gosaikunda

  • 1,960 m
  • Best Mar – May · Sep – Nov
  • 1 night

Dhunche spreads along a ridge above the Trishuli valley, a mix of government offices, schools, lodges and an older Tamang quarter of stone houses with carved windows. As the district headquarters of Rasuwa, it has a hospital, police and army posts, banks and the main office of Langtang National Park. For travellers it is two things: the checkpoint where permits are checked on the road to Syabrubesi, and the trailhead for the walk to Chandanbari and Gosaikunda.

The drive in from Kathmandu climbs past Trishuli Bazaar and Betrawati, then winds up switchbacks through terraced hills to the park gate at the edge of town. From the higher parts of Dhunche you can see the Ganesh Himal to the west and the Langtang range to the north-east on clear mornings. The old town below the main road is worth a short walk for its Tamang houses, a small gompa and terraced fields.

Most pilgrims heading to Gosaikunda spend a night here after the drive, especially during Janai Purnima, when the town fills with buses and the trail starts at first light. Trekkers on the Langtang–Gosaikunda route usually finish here and drive back to Kathmandu. At 1,960 m Dhunche is cool in the evenings, around 5–10 °C in spring and autumn and near freezing in winter, and it receives heavy rain from June to September.

What to see and do

  • Gosaikunda trailhead

The trail to Chandanbari (Sing Gompa) and Gosaikunda leaves from the upper part of town, climbing through Deurali and oak and rhododendron forest. It gains about 1,370 m to Chandanbari in 5–6 hours, the first and steepest day of the pilgrimage.

  • Langtang National Park headquarters

Nepal's first Himalayan national park, created in 1976, is run from Dhunche. Permits are checked at the park gate on the road into town. A small visitor area has had displays on the park's red pandas, Himalayan black bears and forest types.

  • Old Tamang quarter

Below the main road, narrow lanes run between stone houses with carved wooden windows, prayer flags and buffalo sheds. A short walk with your guide shows how Tamang families farm the steep slopes around the district capital.

  • Views of the Ganesh Himal

On clear mornings from October to April, the upper road and ridge above Dhunche look west to the Ganesh Himal group and north-east towards Langtang. Early morning before departure is the best time for photographs.

  • Janai Purnima pilgrim town

In August, buses and jeeps pour into Dhunche as pilgrims arrive for the Gosaikunda mela. The town becomes a staging post, with tea stalls, offerings on sale and groups setting off in the dark for the lake.

How to reach Dhunche

Road

Dhunche is about 117 km from Kathmandu via Kakani, Trishuli Bazaar (Bidur) and Betrawati on the Pasang Lhamu Highway. Buses take 6–7 hours and jeeps about 5–6 hours. Syabrubesi is a further 15 km and about 1 hour downhill.

On foot

Trekkers arrive on foot from Chandanbari (Sing Gompa) at the end of the Gosaikunda trek, a descent of 4–5 hours, or from Thulo Syabru on the Langtang side by trail.

Helicopter

There is a helipad used for emergency and charter flights, about 30 minutes from Kathmandu. It is not part of regular tours but can be used for evacuations from the Gosaikunda trail.

Where to stay

Dhunche has a dozen or so simple hotels and lodges along the main road and near the bus park, plus a few smaller guesthouses in the older town below. Rooms are basic, with attached bathrooms in most, hot water from gas geysers and restaurants serving dal bhat, chowmein and Tibetan bread. None are star-rated, and standards are similar to those in Syabrubesi. During Janai Purnima every bed is taken days in advance, so we book group rooms early or use family-run homes in the old town. Choose a room away from the bus park if you want a quiet night before an early start to Gosaikunda.

Tips from our trip managers

  • Have your Langtang National Park permit and passport ready at the park gate; the bus or jeep will stop for checks.
  • Start the walk to Chandanbari early, by 7 am, because the forest above Deurali often clouds over after midday.
  • Buy puja offerings and dry snacks in Dhunche before the trek; supplies above Chandanbari are limited and expensive.
  • In August, book transport and rooms for Janai Purnima at least two weeks ahead.
  • If you feel sick from the winding drive, eat light and drink plenty of water before starting to climb next morning.

Questions about Dhunche

How far is Dhunche from Kathmandu?

Dhunche is about 117 km from Kathmandu by road via Trishuli Bazaar and Betrawati. Buses take 6–7 hours and private jeeps 5–6 hours. The road climbs steep switchbacks after Betrawati and can be affected by landslides from June to September. Syabrubesi, the Langtang trek start, is a further hour down the road.

What is the altitude of Dhunche?

Dhunche lies at about 1,960 m. It is a comfortable height for a first night after the drive from Kathmandu (1,400 m). The next day's climb to Chandanbari (3,330 m) gains about 1,370 m, so arriving rested and well hydrated helps.

Where do I get a Langtang permit, Dhunche or Kathmandu?

You can pay the Langtang National Park entry fee at the Nepal Tourism Board office in Kathmandu or at the park counter in Dhunche. The TIMS card is arranged in Kathmandu through your trekking agency. Most agencies prepare both in advance. Check current status before you travel, as fees and procedures change.

Is Dhunche the start of the Gosaikunda trek?

Yes. The standard Gosaikunda trek starts in Dhunche, climbing to Chandanbari (Sing Gompa) on day one and reaching the lake via Lauribina on day two or three. Some trekkers start instead from Thulo Syabru, joining the trail above Chandanbari, especially if coming from the Langtang Valley.

Are there ATMs in Dhunche?

Yes, as the district headquarters Dhunche has bank branches and ATMs, but they can run out of cash or reject foreign cards, especially during Janai Purnima. Bring enough Nepali rupees from Kathmandu for the whole trip. Lodges on the trail to Gosaikunda accept cash only.

What is Dhunche like during Janai Purnima?

Very busy. Thousands of pilgrims arrive by bus and jeep in the days before the August full moon, lodges and homes fill up, and the trail to Gosaikunda becomes a moving line of people. Food stalls and shops stay open late. Book rooms and transport early, and expect traffic delays on the road.

Is there a hospital in Dhunche?

Yes, Rasuwa's district hospital is in Dhunche, with basic emergency care. Serious cases, including severe altitude sickness from the Gosaikunda trail, are referred to Kathmandu by road or helicopter. Travel insurance that covers helicopter evacuation up to at least 5,000 m is essential for Langtang and Gosaikunda treks.

What is the weather like in Dhunche?

Spring and autumn days are mild at 15–22 °C, with cool nights of 5–10 °C. Winter nights fall close to freezing and frost is common. From June to September, heavy monsoon rain brings cloud, leeches and landslides on the road. October and November are usually the clearest months.

Can I drive beyond Dhunche to start the Gosaikunda trek higher?

Rough tracks have been cut above Dhunche towards Deurali and beyond, and some jeeps use them in the dry season, which shortens the first day. Conditions vary by season and the tracks may be closed after rain. Ask your agency for the current situation; check current status before you travel.
