The lower bazaar of Syabrubesi grew up around the road, but the original village sits on a terrace above it. A stepped path climbs for about 20 minutes from near the bus stand, past maize fields and buffalo sheds, to a cluster of stone houses with carved wooden windows and slate or tin roofs. Prayer flags run between the rooftops and a small gompa sits at the top of the settlement.
From the upper terrace you look north up the Bhote Koshi towards Timure and Rasuwagadhi, and east to where the Langtang Khola cuts its gorge towards Lama Hotel. Your guide can explain how the village changed when the road arrived, and how families rebuilt after the 2015 earthquake damaged many homes here. Children often stop to practise their English, and older residents may be spinning wool or drying maize on the flat roofs.
The walk takes 1.5 hours at an easy pace and is suitable for anyone who can manage stairs. Go in the late afternoon when the light is warm and the day's buses have arrived. If the gompa is open, remove shoes, walk clockwise and leave a small donation. It is a useful first lesson in Tamang customs before you meet more of them on the trail.

Questions travellers ask
Is the Old Syabrubesi walk difficult?
No. It is a 20-minute climb on stone steps and a farm path, then a level stroll around the upper village. Anyone who can climb two or three flights of stairs will manage. Allow about 1.5 hours in total including time at the gompa and viewpoints, and wear the shoes you will trek in so you test them on uneven ground.
Can we enter the gompa in Old Syabrubesi?
Usually yes, if the caretaker is around. Remove your shoes, avoid pointing your feet at the altar and walk clockwise around any stupa or prayer wheels. Photography inside is sometimes not allowed, so ask first. A donation of NPR 100–200 in the box is a polite way to say thank you and helps with upkeep.
Do we need a guide for this walk?
You can find the path on your own, but a guide adds a lot. They can explain Tamang house design, the gompa's role in village life and how Syabrubesi changed after the road and the 2015 earthquake. On our treks the walk is led by your trek guide on arrival day at no extra cost.
