On the first night of a Langtang trek your guide sits down with the group after dinner to walk through the days ahead. Expect a clear outline of tomorrow's route: cross the bridge, follow the Langtang Khola through Domen and Bamboo at about 1,970 m, then climb through Rimche to Lama Hotel at about 2,470 m, roughly 6 hours on foot. You will hear where lunch is, where water can be refilled and which sections are steep.
The guide also covers altitude basics: walk slowly, drink 3–4 litres a day, and report headache, nausea or unusual tiredness early. Most Langtang itineraries reach Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870 m on day four and climb Kyanjin Ri at 4,773 m on day five, so understanding acclimatisation matters. Permits and passports are checked so nothing is missing at the Dhunche or trail checkpoints.
Then comes the practical part. Porters usually carry up to 15–20 kg shared between two trekkers, so bags are weighed and anything unnecessary is left at the lodge or in Kathmandu. Check boots, rain cover, headlamp, water purification and warm layers. Syabrubesi shops sell basic gloves, hats and ponchos if you forgot something, but choice is limited and quality varies.

Questions travellers ask
How much can a porter carry on the Langtang trek?
Responsible agencies limit porter loads to about 20–25 kg including the porter's own kit, which usually means one porter for two trekkers with 10 kg each. We weigh bags at the Syabrubesi briefing. Pack light: two sets of trekking clothes, one warm layer set, a down jacket and toiletries are usually enough for 7–11 days.
Can I buy trekking gear in Syabrubesi?
Only basics. Small shops sell gloves, woolly hats, ponchos, water bottles, snacks and sometimes cheap trekking poles. Proper boots, sleeping bags and down jackets are far better bought or rented in Thamel, Kathmandu, before you leave. Treat Syabrubesi as a last-chance stop for small items, not a place to equip a trek.
What is the first day of the Langtang trek like?
From Syabrubesi at 1,460 m you walk about 6 hours and 11 km to Lama Hotel at about 2,470 m, gaining about 1,000 m. The trail follows the Langtang Khola through subtropical and then oak and bamboo forest, with a few steep climbs after Bamboo. Langur monkeys are common and red pandas live in these forests, though sightings are rare.
