The road from Bhairahawa to Lumbini runs west across completely flat farmland, making it one of the easiest rides in Nepal. We start at 6 am, before traffic builds, on hired hybrid bicycles checked by our team. A support vehicle follows with water, luggage and space for anyone who wants to stop riding.
Once past the town's outskirts, the road passes through villages with tea stalls opening, schoolchildren on bicycles, ponds and mustard or wheat fields depending on the season. We stop halfway for tea. The ride takes about 1.5–2 hours at a relaxed pace, including breaks.
We finish near the Lumbini area, where you can shower at your hotel or go straight to the Sacred Garden. The road carries buses and trucks later in the day, so we only run this ride early in the morning and in the cooler months from November to February. Helmets are provided where available; bring your own for the best fit.

Questions travellers ask
Is the road from Bhairahawa to Lumbini safe for cycling?
It is flat and generally manageable early in the morning, when traffic is light. Later in the day buses, trucks and motorbikes make it less pleasant. We ride from 6 am with a support vehicle behind the group and only run the ride in the cooler months.
How fit do I need to be for the Lumbini cycle ride?
Basic fitness is enough. The 22 km route is completely flat, and at a relaxed pace with a tea stop it takes about two hours. Anyone who cycles occasionally at home can manage it. The support car can pick you up at any point.
Can children join the Bhairahawa to Lumbini ride?
Confident riders aged 14 and over can join with a parent. Because the road carries some traffic, we do not recommend it for younger children; they can enjoy the traffic-free monastic zone ride in Lumbini instead, which is shorter and safer.
