Bhairahawa sits on the Terai plain at about 105 m, where the Siddhartha Highway from Pokhara meets the road to the Indian border. The town's official name is Siddharthanagar, but nearly everyone, including bus conductors and airline staff, still calls it Bhairahawa. It is a working market town rather than a sightseeing destination: wholesale shops, electronics stores, sweet shops, banks and hotels line the main roads, and Indian and Nepali shoppers move constantly between here and Sonauli.
Two things make it important for travellers. The first is the border at Belahiya, 4 km south, the busiest crossing for tourists between India and Nepal, with Nepal immigration for foreign nationals, a customs office for vehicles and an Integrated Check Post on the Indian side at Sonauli. The second is Gautam Buddha International Airport, upgraded to international status in 2022, with frequent 35-minute domestic flights to Kathmandu and occasional international services.
Most visitors spend a few hours here at most, transferring straight to Lumbini 22 km away, but Bhairahawa is a sensible overnight stop for late flights, early border crossings or large groups that prefer a city hotel. Hotel Nirvana is the long-established mid-range choice. Evening walks through the bazaar, sweet shops and food stalls give a lively taste of the Indo-Nepali border culture.
What to see and do
- Sonauli–Belahiya border
The crossing 4 km south of town is open around the clock for Indian and Nepali citizens, with immigration counters for other nationalities. Rickshaws and taxis wait on both sides, and the walk across the line itself takes only a few minutes.
- Gautam Buddha International Airport
Nepal's second international airport, opened as such in May 2022, sits on the western edge of town. Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines and Shree Airlines fly to Kathmandu in about 35 minutes, often several times a day.
- Border bazaar
The main roads between the bus park and the border are lined with shops selling electronics, cosmetics, clothes, dry fruit and kitchenware. Indian shoppers come for imported goods; Nepali shoppers cross the other way for groceries.
- Terai sweets and street food
Sweet shops sell rasbari, jalebi, peda and lalmohan, while street stalls fry samosas, pakoras and chatpate. Evening is the liveliest time for a food walk, with tea stalls busy until late.
- Base for Ramagrama and Devdaha
Bhairahawa sits between Lumbini, Ramagrama and Devdaha, so groups covering the Koliya sites or heading on to Chitwan or Tansen often find it a convenient base with more hotel and restaurant choice.
Experiences in Bhairahawa (Siddharthanagar)

How to reach Bhairahawa (Siddharthanagar)
Air
Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines and Shree Airlines connect Kathmandu with Bhairahawa in about 35 minutes, usually several times a day. International flights have operated intermittently since 2022; check current status before you travel. The airport is about 3 km from the town centre.
Road
From the Indian side, Sonauli is 4 km south. Gorakhpur is ≈ 100 km · 3 h from the border and Varanasi ≈ 320 km · 8–9 h. From Kathmandu, the road via Mugling, Narayanghat and Butwal is ≈ 280 km · 8–9 h; from Pokhara via the Siddhartha Highway ≈ 190 km · 6–7 h. Tourist and night buses run from both.
Rail
There is no railway in Nepal here. The nearest Indian stations are Nautanwa, about 8 km from Sonauli with few services, and Gorakhpur Junction, about 100 km away, which has trains to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Varanasi.
Where to stay
Bhairahawa has a wider hotel choice than Lumbini, mostly business-style 3-star properties. Hotel Nirvana on Paklihawa Road is the established mid-range option, with a garden, restaurant and quiet rooms, and it is where we place groups and late arrivals. Several newer hotels have opened along the Siddhartha Highway and near the airport since 2022. Budget hotels cluster near the bus park and along the road to the border, though they can be noisy. For a peaceful stay close to the temples, we usually recommend moving on to Lumbini, 30–40 minutes away.
Tips from our trip managers
- Foreign nationals should cross the border in daylight, as immigration counters do not keep 24-hour hours.
- Change only small sums at the border; banks and ATMs in Bhairahawa give fairer rates.
- Indian ₹200 and ₹500 notes issued after November 2016 are now accepted in Nepal up to a limit, but check current status before you travel.
- Nepali SIM cards from Nepal Telecom or Ncell are sold in Bhairahawa; carry your passport or ID and a photo.
- Fix the taxi fare to Lumbini before you start; our packages include private transfers from the border or airport.
