We enter from the western side near the museum and walk the main excavated area, where low brick walls show the plan of houses, a well and part of the inner roadway. Your guide explains the stages of excavation, from early Nepalese surveys to more recent joint projects, and what the layers of pottery tell us about when the city flourished.
The walk then follows the line of the fortifications to the eastern gate. Here the story of the Great Departure is told: the four sights of old age, sickness, death and a wandering monk, the sleeping palace, and the horse Kanthaka carrying the prince across the river. Many pilgrim groups pause for chanting or silent sitting under the trees near the gate.
Finally we visit the twin stupas outside the walls, linked by tradition to the Buddha's parents. The site is flat but the paths are rough earth, so wear closed shoes. Morning light is best for photographs, and winter mornings are often quiet enough to hear only birds and wind in the trees.

Questions travellers ask
Is Tilaurakot the real Kapilavastu?
Nepal identifies Tilaurakot as ancient Kapilavastu, and excavations show a fortified city occupied in the Buddha's era. Indian archaeologists point instead to Piprahwa in Uttar Pradesh, where a relic casket inscription was found. The question is unresolved, and many pilgrims visit both. Tilaurakot's walls and eastern gate make it the more vivid site to walk.
How long do we need at Tilaurakot?
Allow about two hours for the ruins and twin stupas, plus 30–45 minutes for the Kapilvastu Museum. With Kudan and Niglihawa added, the Kapilavastu circuit fills a comfortable half-day from Lumbini, or a full day at a gentle pace with lunch in Taulihawa.
Is there an entry fee for Tilaurakot?
Yes, a modest entry fee is charged by the site authorities, with separate rates for Nepali, SAARC and other foreign visitors, and the museum may charge separately. Fees are revised from time to time, so check current status before you travel. Our circuit packages include entry fees.
