The Budhi Gandaki rises near the Tibet border and runs south through Gorkha district to join the Trishuli at Benighat. Between Machha Khola and Jagat it has carved a deep, twisting gorge, and the trail clings to its sides. You pass Khorlabesi and Tatopani, cross to the east bank at Dobhan and follow sections where the path is cut into rock above white water.
The landscape changes as you go. Rice and banana give way to millet terraces and then to steep forest, with langur monkeys sometimes in the trees. Waterfalls drop hundreds of metres from the valley walls, strongest after the monsoon in September and early October. Mule trains carrying rice, gas and beer for the lodges up the valley pass in both directions, so always step to the uphill side when they come.
Although the net gain is only about 400 m, the many ups and downs make it a full day. Walk early to avoid the midday heat, wear a sunhat and carry 2 litres of water. You reach Jagat in mid afternoon, where the Manaslu Conservation Area checkpoint stamps your permits.

Questions travellers ask
How long is the walk from Machha Khola to Jagat?
Allow 6 to 7 hours for about 22 km, with roughly 400 m of net gain but many ups and downs. You pass Khorlabesi, Tatopani and Dobhan on the way. In the dry season jeeps sometimes run part of this section, but most trekking groups walk it for the gorge scenery.
Is the Budhi Gandaki gorge trail dangerous?
It is safe with normal care. Some sections are narrow and cut into cliffs, and landslide debris crosses the path after heavy rain. Always step to the uphill side when mules pass, keep away from loose edges and follow your guide's advice about rockfall zones. Avoid this stretch in the monsoon.
Will I see mountains on the first day of the Manaslu trek?
Not many. The first day is in a deep gorge, and the big peaks are hidden behind the valley walls. The first clear views of Himalayan peaks usually come around Deng and Namrung on days three and four, and Manaslu itself appears near Lho.
