Marpha village lanes and monastery walk

A slow walk along Marpha's flagstone lane, into a Thakali courtyard house and up the steps to the village monastery, with your guide explaining Thakali clan life, water channels and the salt-trade history of the valley.

  • 1.5 hours
  • Late afternoon, all year
  • Free, donation at the monastery

Thakali families built their wealth on the salt trade, running inns and caravans between Tibet and the hills to the south. Marpha's houses show it: solid stone walls, flat mud roofs for drying grain, inner courtyards for animals and goods, and carved wooden windows facing the lane. Our guide arranges a visit to a family house to see the kitchen, the prayer room and the store rooms.

The lane is laid with flat stones over a channel that brings water from the hills to every house, a system maintained by the village for generations. Look for the small doorways and passages that lead off into courtyards, and the prayer wheels set into walls. Thakali culture blends Buddhist practice with older clan worship, and you will see both in household shrines.

Steps lead up to the Nyingma monastery, where monks are usually happy to show the prayer hall with its statues of Guru Rinpoche and Avalokiteshvara. The roof gives the best view over Marpha's white houses and green orchards. The whole walk takes about 1.5 hours and suits all ages, with only one steep flight of steps.

Questions travellers ask

Who are the Thakali people?

The Thakali are an ethnic group from the Thak Khola, the upper Kali Gandaki between Ghasa and Jomsom. They became prosperous traders and innkeepers on the salt route between Tibet and Nepal, and many now run hotels and businesses across Nepal. Their cuisine, the Thakali khana set, is famous nationwide.

Is Marpha monastery open to visitors?

Yes. The monastery is usually open during the day, and a monk or caretaker will open the prayer hall for visitors. Remove shoes, do not touch statues or offerings, and ask before taking photos. A donation of NPR 100–200 is customary. Morning and evening prayers are the best times to hear chanting.

Is Marpha good for an overnight stay?

Yes. Marpha is quieter than Jomsom and, at 2,670 m, slightly lower, which helps sleep. Lodges are simple but clean, with good food. Overnighting makes sense if you are trekking, cycling or driving from Pokhara. If you need to catch an early flight from Jomsom, sleep in Jomsom instead.
