Upper Mustang normally takes 8–14 days to reach by jeep or on foot. This helicopter day tour compresses the essentials into one long morning: the flight up the Kali Gandaki gorge, the red and ochre canyons of Chhusang and Ghami from the air, a guided walk through Lo Manthang's walls and gompas, and a stop at Muktinath on the way back. It suits travellers short of time, photographers who want the aerial view and older guests who could not manage the road.

Because Lo Manthang lies inside the Upper Mustang restricted area, even a day landing needs the restricted area permit, which we arrange in advance with your passport details. The helicopter refuels in Jomsom on the way up. At 3,840 m, Lo Manthang is about 130 m higher than Muktinath, so walk slowly, drink water and keep your visit gentle. Seats can be bought individually on shared departures or as a private charter.

  • About 1.5–2 hours guided time inside Lo Manthang's walls

  • Upper Mustang restricted area permit included

Questions about this trip

How much is the Lo Manthang helicopter tour?

A shared seat starts at about ₹96,000 (US$ 1,150) per person with five passengers. A private charter costs about US$ 5,200–6,200 per helicopter, depending on season, fuel and ground time. The price includes the Upper Mustang permit for one day. Check current status before you travel.

Do I need the Upper Mustang permit for a helicopter visit?

Yes. Lo Manthang is inside the restricted area, so every visitor, including Indian nationals, needs the restricted area permit for the day of landing, plus the ACAP permit. We obtain both through our registered agency using your passport or voter ID copies. Check current status before you travel.

How long do we get in Lo Manthang?

Usually 1.5–2 hours, enough for a guided walk through the main gate, Jampa Lhakhang and Thubchen Gompa, the palace square and tea. Longer stays are possible on a charter for an extra fee. Ground time is limited by weather, as wind and cloud increase towards midday.

Can we see the Mustang caves on the heli tour?

You see many cave-riddled cliffs from the air around Chhusang, Ghami and Tsarang. Visiting Jhong Cave at Chhoser, north of Lo Manthang, needs extra ground time and a jeep or a short helicopter hop, which can be arranged on a private charter at extra cost.

Is the Lo Manthang heli tour suitable for elderly people?

Yes, for those in reasonable health. There is no long walk, though Lo Manthang's lanes are uneven and at 3,840 m. Walk slowly, rest often and skip stairs inside gompas if tired. Anyone with heart or lung disease should take medical advice before flying to this altitude.

Can I stay overnight in Lo Manthang on a heli tour?

Yes, but the helicopter cannot usually wait, so it flies you in one day and returns for you on another, which means paying two rotations. Royal Mustang Resort is the best place to stay. A night allows you to see the town at dawn and visit Chhoser by jeep.

When is the best time for an Upper Mustang heli tour?

April to June and September to November offer the best flying weather, with clear mornings. June to August is drier in Upper Mustang than elsewhere but monsoon cloud often blocks the Kali Gandaki gorge. Winter is possible on clear days but very cold, and many lodges are closed.

How many passengers fit on the Lo Manthang helicopter?

Up to five passengers in an AS350 B3, subject to a total weight limit of around 400–450 kg, which can drop on warm days. Each passenger may carry a small bag of about 5 kg. We ask for weights at booking so the pilot can plan the load.

Can we do Lo Manthang and Damodar Kunda together?

On a private charter it is possible to combine Lo Manthang, Damodar Kunda and Muktinath, but it means a long, costly day with refuelling and high-altitude landings. We usually recommend Lo Manthang with Muktinath, or Damodar Kunda with Muktinath, as separate tours.
