Nepal by Road from India: Borders, Permits and Routes

By Best Nepal Tour Package Travel Desk

Why travel to Nepal by road

Nepal shares an open border of more than 1,700 km with five Indian states, and for millions of Indian travellers the road is the obvious way in. It is cheaper than flying for families and groups, it lets you bring your own car or a trusted driver, and it turns the journey into part of the holiday: Lumbini is less than an hour from the Sonauli border, and Pokhara and Kathmandu are a day's drive further.

The trade-off is time. Nepal's highways are mostly two-lane, often under widening works, and climb steeply once they leave the Terai plain. A realistic average is 30–40 km an hour on hill roads. Plan short driving days, start early and avoid night driving, and a road trip becomes one of the best ways to see the country's change from rice plains to Himalayan foothills.

Choosing your border crossing

Nepal has many crossing points, but six major ones are open to foreign nationals with immigration offices and visas on arrival: Kakarbhitta, Biratnagar, Birgunj, Bhairahawa, Nepalgunj and Mahendranagar. Indian citizens can use these and several smaller points. Pick the crossing by where you want to go first in Nepal rather than by the shortest distance from home.

For Lumbini, Pokhara and a classic first trip, Sonauli–Belahiya is the best choice: good roads, tourist facilities and the Buddhist sites at the start. For Kathmandu directly from Bihar, Raxaul–Birgunj is shorter but much busier with trucks. Rupaidiha–Nepalgunj suits Bardia National Park and flights to Simikot for Kailash; Panitanki–Kakarbhitta suits Ilam and eastern Nepal from Siliguri and Darjeeling.

ID and visa rules at the border

Indian citizens do not need a visa for Nepal. Adults need a valid passport or Election Commission voter ID. Under rules published by the Indian embassy in Kathmandu, children under 15 and adults over 65 can usually show another photo ID with proof of age, such as Aadhaar, PAN or a driving licence, and students aged 15–18 can use a school identity certificate. Aadhaar alone is generally not accepted for adults aged 15 to 65. There is no stamp at the border.

Foreign nationals need a passport valid for six months, an Indian exit stamp and a Nepal visa, which most nationalities can buy on arrival at the main crossings in US dollars. To return to India overland, they need an Indian visa valid for land entry; the e-Visa is accepted only at a few land crossings, and Raxaul was recently added while Sonauli has not been. Check current status before you travel, as these lists change.

Taking an Indian vehicle into Nepal

Indian private cars, jeeps and motorcycles can enter Nepal. For same-day visits to border markets, vehicles register at the checkpoint for a free pass. For touring, the driver must get a customs pass, known locally as a bhansar permit, at the customs office on the Nepal side, paying a per-day charge that is higher for cars than for two-wheelers. A vehicle may remain in Nepal for no more than 30 days in a calendar year.

Documents usually checked are the registration certificate, driving licence, valid insurance, pollution certificate and the owner's ID, with an authorisation letter if the owner is not present. Commercial tourist vehicles from India also need the pass. Nepal drives on the left, but hill roads, police checkpoints and local rules differ from India, which is why many families switch to a Nepal car and driver at the border. Charges and limits are revised periodically, so check current status before you travel.

  • Registration certificate (RC) of the vehicle
  • Driving licence of the person driving
  • Valid insurance and pollution certificate
  • Passport or voter ID of all travellers
  • Authorisation letter if the owner is not travelling

Drive times and road conditions

From Sonauli, Lumbini is 45 minutes, Pokhara about 190 km and 6–7 hours via the Siddhartha Highway, and Kathmandu about 280 km and 8–9 hours via Butwal, Narayanghat and Mugling. From Gorakhpur add about three hours to the border; from Varanasi about 8–9 hours; from Lucknow about 7–8 hours. On the Indian side, highways are fast but foggy in December and January mornings.

In Nepal, the Narayanghat–Mugling and Butwal–Narayanghat stretches have seen long widening works, the Siddhartha Highway north of Butwal is steep and winding, and monsoon landslides from June to September can close roads for hours. Fuel stations and ATMs are frequent in the Terai but fewer in the hills. Do not drive after dark on hill roads, where trucks and buses dominate.

Sample routes from India

A popular 6-night loop starts in Gorakhpur: Lumbini one night, Pokhara two, Kathmandu two and Chitwan one, returning to Gorakhpur through Sonauli. For a one-way trip ending with a flight home, cross at Sonauli and drive Lumbini, Tansen, Pokhara, Bandipur and Kathmandu over seven nights, keeping every drive under five hours.

From Varanasi, allow nine nights to include Lumbini, Pokhara, Kathmandu and Chitwan with a final night in Bhairahawa to break the return drive. Pilgrims can link Sarnath and Kushinagar with Lumbini and Kapilavastu on a 7-night Buddhist circuit via Sonauli.

Costs and money matters

A private Nepal car with driver typically costs about ₹5,000–7,000 a day depending on vehicle size and route, including fuel and the driver's food and lodging. Tourist buses between Bhairahawa, Pokhara and Kathmandu are far cheaper but slower. Our road packages from Gorakhpur start at about ₹27,000 per person for six nights with 3-star hotels.

Indian rupees are accepted widely at a fixed rate of about NPR 1.6 per INR. Since late 2025, Indian ₹200 and ₹500 notes issued after November 2016 can be carried up to ₹25,000 per person. UPI-based payments work at a growing number of Nepali shops through linked services. Buy a Nepal SIM in the first town after the border for cheaper data. Check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask

Can I go to Nepal by road from India?

Yes. Indian citizens can cross at any designated border point with a passport or voter ID and need no visa. Foreign nationals can cross at six main points, including Sonauli–Belahiya and Raxaul–Birgunj, with a Nepal visa on arrival. Sonauli is the most convenient for Lumbini, Pokhara and a first trip.

Which border is best for Nepal from India?

Sonauli–Belahiya, near Gorakhpur, is best for most travellers: it is closest to Lumbini, has good roads to Pokhara and Kathmandu and handles tourists smoothly. Raxaul–Birgunj is shorter for Kathmandu from Bihar but congested with trucks. Kakarbhitta suits eastern Nepal and Nepalgunj suits the far west.

Is an Indian car allowed in Nepal?

Yes. Indian private vehicles can enter Nepal with a customs pass from the Nepal customs office at the border, paying a per-day charge, for up to 30 days in a calendar year. Carry the RC, licence, insurance and pollution certificate. Check current status before you travel, as rules are revised.

Do Indians need a passport to go to Nepal by road?

No. A voter ID card is also accepted for adults. Children under 15 and adults over 65 can usually use another photo ID with age proof, such as Aadhaar. Aadhaar alone is generally not valid for adults aged 15 to 65. Check current status before you travel.

How long does it take from Delhi to Kathmandu by road?

About 1,200 km via Lucknow, Gorakhpur and Sonauli, or via Raxaul. Plan at least two days, ideally three: Delhi to Gorakhpur or Lucknow on day 1, cross into Nepal with a night in Lumbini on day 2, and reach Kathmandu or Pokhara on day 3. Many travellers take a train to Gorakhpur instead.

Is it safe to drive in Nepal?

It is safe with care, but hill roads are narrow, steep and winding, with buses and trucks, and monsoon landslides are common. Drive only in daylight, avoid June to September if possible, and consider hiring a Nepali driver who knows the routes and checkpoints.

Can foreigners travel from India to Nepal overland?

Yes, at the six main crossings, including Sonauli and Raxaul, with an Indian exit stamp and a Nepal visa on arrival. Returning to India overland needs an Indian visa valid for that land crossing; e-Visas are accepted only at a few, so check current status before you travel.

What is the cost of a Nepal road trip from India?

Our road packages start at about ₹27,000 per person for six nights from Gorakhpur with 3-star hotels, breakfast and dinner, and a private Nepal car. A private car with driver alone costs about ₹5,000–7,000 a day. Fuel, tolls and Indian-side transport are extra if you drive yourself.

Is there a train from India to Nepal?

A passenger rail link runs from Jaynagar in Bihar to Kurtha near Janakpur, mainly used by Indian and Nepali citizens. There is no railway to Lumbini, Pokhara or Kathmandu. For Lumbini, take a train to Gorakhpur and drive three hours to the Sonauli border.
