The Yak Hotel has been a fixture on Beijing East Road for decades and is mentioned in most guidebooks to Tibet. Its location is the main draw: the Barkhor and Jokhang are about five minutes away on foot, so you can join the evening pilgrim circuit without a vehicle. Rooms range from simple standard twins to larger deluxe rooms, all with private bathrooms and heating. Quality varies between wings, so we request the newer rooms.
We use the Yak on our standard Lhasa tours and Tibet group tours when travellers prefer to stay in the old town at a moderate price. The hotel has a restaurant and Wi-Fi, though many foreign apps are blocked in China. It is a simpler choice than the 5-star hotels, with fewer facilities, but its position in the heart of Lhasa makes up for a lot.

Questions travellers ask
How far is the Yak Hotel from the Jokhang?
About five minutes on foot. The hotel is on Beijing East Road at the edge of the old town, so the Barkhor circuit and Jokhang square are a short walk away. The Potala is about 2 km west, around 10 minutes by car.
Is the Yak Hotel comfortable?
It is a simple 3-star hotel with ensuite rooms, heating and Wi-Fi. Rooms differ in age and quality, so we request renovated rooms. It is clean and practical rather than luxurious; travellers wanting more comfort can upgrade to the St. Regis or Shangri-La.
Can I upgrade from the Yak Hotel on a Lhasa tour?
Yes. Our Lhasa tours price the Yak Hotel or similar as standard, with upgrades to 4-star or 5-star hotels such as the Shangri-La or St. Regis available at extra cost. Upgrades depend on availability, especially from May to October.
