Crocodiles and watchtower views at Bishazari

On sunny winter mornings, mugger crocodiles haul out on the lake banks to warm up. Watch them from the embankment and climb the watchtower for a wide view over the wetland and forest.

  • 1.5–2 hours
  • Mid-morning on sunny days, Nov–Mar
  • Community forest entry ≈ NPR 100–300

Mugger crocodiles are cold-blooded and on winter mornings come out of the water to bask on mud banks and fallen logs, mouths often open to cool down as the sun climbs. Bishazari Tal is one of the best places in Chitwan to see them at leisure. Your guide scans the banks and points out animals lying half-submerged that most people walk past without noticing.

The wooden watchtower near the lake gives a view over the water, reed beds and forest canopy. It is a good spot to wait quietly for deer coming to drink, or for kingfishers and herons fishing below. On clear days in winter, the hills of the Mahabharat range rise to the north.

This short outing suits families and anyone who wants a taste of the wetland without a long walk. Keep children close to the embankment, never approach the water's edge, and do not throw food. A small community forest entry fee applies; check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask

Are the crocodiles at Bishazari Tal dangerous?

Mugger crocodiles can be dangerous if you go to the water's edge, but from the embankment and watchtower with a guide you are safe. Keep a few metres back from the water, keep children close and never feed or provoke them. Attacks on visitors following these rules are extremely rare.

When are crocodiles easiest to see?

Sunny mornings from November to March, from about 9 to 11 am, when they bask on the banks to warm up. In summer they spend more time in the water and are harder to spot, though eyes and snouts can still be seen in the shallows.

Is there a watchtower at Bishazari Tal?

Yes, there is a watchtower near the main lake that gives a view over the water and forest. It is a good place to wait for wildlife and to photograph birds. Climb carefully, as steps can be steep and slippery after rain.
