This is the Chitwan trip we recommend most often. The extra night changes the experience: instead of rushing a half-day jeep drive, you spend a full day in the park with a packed lunch, heading west past Kasara toward the quieter forest and grassland where tigers are seen more often. A second morning goes to Bishazari Tal, the Ramsar-listed wetland, for birds and basking crocodiles, and there is time to sit by the pool or cycle through Tharu villages.
We travel by private car, which is quicker and far more comfortable than the tourist bus and lets you stop at Devghat or for fried fish in Narayangarh on the way. Rooms are at a resort in Sauraha with a pool, and all meals in Chitwan, park fees and a licensed naturalist are included. It suits couples, families with older children and photographers who want more than one chance at the big animals.

Day by day
-
DAY1
Drive to Sauraha, sunset on the Rapti
Your driver collects you from your Kathmandu hotel at 8 am. The road leaves the valley at Naubise and follows the Trishuli gorge to Mugling, then the river south to Narayangarh, where we stop for lunch, fried river fish for those who eat it or a vegetarian thali. You reach Sauraha around 2 pm. After check-in and a briefing from your naturalist, walk to the Rapti sandbank for sunset, watching for rhinos crossing on the far side, then dinner at the resort.
-
DAY2
Full-day jeep safari into the core
The longest and best wildlife day. You leave after an early breakfast, cross the Rapti and drive west through sal forest and grassland with a naturalist, stopping at Lami Tal and Tamor Tal and at watchtowers to scan for rhino, gaur, deer and sloth bear. At Kasara, visit the gharial breeding centre, where hatchlings of this critically endangered crocodile are raised for release. A packed lunch is eaten at a forest post before the drive continues into quieter areas where tiger pugmarks are common. Back in Sauraha by around 5 pm.
-
DAY3
Bishazari Tal, canoe and jungle walk
At dawn we drive 30 minutes to Bishazari Tal and walk the embankment and forest trails with a local guide, looking for storks, herons, kingfishers and mugger crocodiles basking in the early sun. Back at Sauraha for a late breakfast, then a 45-minute canoe ride on the Rapti and a guided walk back through riverine forest via the Elephant Breeding Centre. The late afternoon is free for the pool or a bicycle ride through Tharu villages, and the evening ends with the stick dance show.
-
DAY4
Devghat and return to Kathmandu
After breakfast, drive 45 minutes to Devghat, the sacred confluence of the Trishuli and Kali Gandaki, where the Narayani begins. Walk across the suspension bridge and visit the ghats and ashrams for an hour. The road then climbs back up the Trishuli valley via Mugling to Kathmandu, arriving around 4–5 pm. Your driver drops you at your hotel or the airport. If you are flying out the same evening, book a departure after 8 pm.

Questions about this trip
Why choose 3 nights in Chitwan instead of 2?
The third night allows a full-day jeep safari into the core of the park, where tiger and sloth bear sightings are more likely, plus Bishazari Tal and a relaxed afternoon. With two nights you see rhinos and crocodiles but spend more time travelling than in the park. Most guests who try both prefer three.
How much does a 3-night Chitwan safari cost?
From about ₹22,000 per person twin sharing for two guests, including private car from Kathmandu, three nights' resort stay, all meals in Chitwan, activities and SAARC park fees. International guests pay from about US$ 290 including the higher park fee. Groups of four sharing a car pay less.
What are my chances of seeing a tiger on this trip?
Better than on a short trip, because the full-day jeep safari goes deep into the park. Sightings are still never guaranteed; most guests see pugmarks and hear alarm calls. February to May, when grass is short and tigers visit water, gives the best odds. Rhinos, gaur, deer and crocodiles are very likely.
Is the full-day jeep safari tiring?
Yes, it is 8 to 9 hours on rough forest tracks, with stops at watchtowers and a packed lunch. It suits most adults and children over about 10. Seniors or anyone with back problems can switch to a half-day drive and a second canoe ride; just tell us when booking.
Can we travel by flight instead of private car?
Yes. Kathmandu–Bharatpur flights take about 25 minutes, and we add airport transfers in Chitwan. It costs more but saves around five hours each way. Winter fog can delay morning flights in December and January, so we book midday flights then.
Is this Chitwan package suitable for families?
Yes, for families with children over about 8. Younger children may find the full-day jeep drive long, and we can swap it for two half-day drives. The walking safari is for 12 and over. The resort pool, canoe, bicycle ride and dance show are always popular with children.
What is Bishazari Tal and why is it included?
Bishazari Tal is a Ramsar-listed wetland of oxbow lakes in the park's buffer zone, about 30 minutes from Sauraha. It is one of the best birding spots in central Nepal and a reliable place to see mugger crocodiles. It adds a quieter, different landscape to the park safaris.
Do I need to carry my passport for the park?
Yes. Park permits are issued by nationality, and naturalists may need your passport details. Indian nationals can use a passport or voter ID card. Keep a photocopy with you on safaris and the original at the resort safe.
Can I extend this trip to Pokhara or Lumbini?
Yes. Instead of returning to Kathmandu on day 4, drive to Pokhara (about 150 km, 5–6 hours) or Lumbini (about 165 km, 4–5 hours). Our Chitwan and Lumbini tour shows a sample route, and we can quote any combination.
