The ride leaves Sauraha early and heads west through Bachhauli and the fields around Tandi, crossing the Mahendra Highway carefully with your guide before turning onto quieter roads toward Tikauli. Along the way you pass Tharu houses, schools, ponds and, in January, fields of yellow mustard. The route is flat, about 15 km each way, on a mix of paved and dirt roads.
At the lakes you lock the bikes at the community forest office and walk with your guide for one to two hours along the embankment and through the forest, looking for crocodiles, birds and deer. There is time for tea at a local stall before the ride back, reaching Sauraha by early afternoon.
This trip suits travellers who ride regularly and are comfortable on rough roads and in light traffic. We provide mountain bikes and helmets, and a support vehicle can be arranged for families or anyone who wants to ride one way only. Avoid the hot months of April and May unless you start very early.

Questions travellers ask
How far is Bishazari Tal from Sauraha by bike?
About 15 km each way, around 1 to 1.5 hours of riding at an easy pace on flat roads. The full round trip with a walk at the lakes takes 4 to 5 hours. We provide bikes, helmets and a guide.
Is the cycle route to Bishazari Tal safe?
Mostly. The route uses quiet village roads, but you must cross the Mahendra Highway, which has fast buses and trucks. Your guide leads the crossing. Wear a helmet, ride single file and avoid the trip in heavy rain. A support jeep is available.
Can children cycle to Bishazari Tal?
Confident teenagers can. For younger children, 30 km is too far; we suggest driving to the lakes and cycling a short loop around Sauraha instead. A support vehicle can carry tired riders on the way back.
