Walking safaris enter the park on foot from Sauraha, Kasara or Meghauli with a minimum of two licensed naturalists, one leading and one at the back. The guides carry bamboo sticks, not guns. The pace is slow: you stop to look at fresh rhino dung, a sloth bear's dig marks on a termite mound, tiger scratch marks on a tree trunk, and to listen for the barking call of a spotted deer that warns of a predator.
A half-day walk covers 6 to 10 km. A full-day walk can reach 15 to 20 km and often combines with a canoe ride or a stop at a watchtower. Chitwan's walks are real wildlife encounters, not nature trails; rhinos and sloth bears are the main risk, and guides brief you on climbing a tree, running in zigzags or standing still depending on the animal. Groups usually stay under six walkers.
We book walking safaris only for fit adults and teenagers who are comfortable with the risk and will follow instructions without argument. Wear closed shoes, long trousers in dull colours and carry 1.5 litres of water. Half-day walks cost around NPR 2,500–3,500 per person, full days around NPR 4,500–6,000, plus park fees; check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask
Is a jungle walk in Chitwan dangerous?
It carries real risk, which is why the park requires at least two licensed guides. Rhinos and sloth bears can charge if surprised. Accidents are rare when walkers stay together, keep quiet and do exactly what guides say. We do not book walks for children under 12, pregnant travellers or anyone who cannot move quickly over rough ground.
What will I see on a Chitwan walking safari?
More detail and fewer big animals than on a jeep. You will see tracks, dung, scratch marks and birds at close range, plus deer, monkeys and often a rhino in the grass. Tiger sightings on foot are rare. The experience is about reading the forest and feeling its scale.
How long is the jungle walk and how fit do I need to be?
A half-day walk is 3 to 4 hours over flat ground, with some sand, river crossings by canoe and grass taller than your head. You need to be able to walk 8 to 10 km and move quickly if told. A full-day walk is 7 to 8 hours and suits regular walkers.
