Jeeps carry up to eight passengers on raised bench seats, with a driver and a park-licensed naturalist. From Sauraha you cross the Rapti by dugout or bridge to the park side, then drive through sal forest and grassland toward Kasara and the lakes of Lami Tal and Tamor Tal. The half-day loop usually takes in the crocodile-breeding ponds at Kasara and a few watchtowers where you stop, climb and scan the grass for movement.
A full-day safari, often called the deep jungle drive, goes further toward the Reu river and the western grasslands. It costs more and you spend eight or nine hours bouncing on dirt tracks with a packed lunch, but tiger and sloth bear sightings are more frequent away from the busy Sauraha sector. In February to April, when the grass has been cut and burned, visibility is at its best.
We book jeep slots for the morning departure where possible, since the first two hours after sunrise are the most active. Shared jeeps cost about NPR 2,500–3,500 per person for a half day and around NPR 4,000–6,000 for a full day, plus the daily park fee. A private jeep for a family runs higher, roughly NPR 14,000–20,000 per vehicle; prices change each season, so check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask
What are the chances of seeing a tiger on a Chitwan jeep safari?
Honest answer: low on a single half-day drive, perhaps one trip in ten or fewer, and better on a full-day drive in February to May when grass is short and tigers come to water. Rhinos, spotted deer, wild boar, peacocks and crocodiles are near certain. We never promise a tiger, and any operator who does is guessing.
Is a full-day or half-day jeep safari better?
Half day suits families, seniors and anyone on a two-night trip; you see rhino and deer and are back for lunch. A full day is for keen wildlife watchers and photographers who can sit for eight hours on rough tracks. It goes deeper into the park, where tiger, sloth bear and gaur sightings are more likely.
Can children go on a jeep safari in Chitwan?
Yes. Children of any age can join a jeep safari, which is the safest way for families to see the park. Very young children find the full-day drive long and dusty, so we book a half-day morning trip for families with under-tens and carry water, snacks and a hat for each child.
