Basantapur, in Terhathum district, lies about 1.5 hours beyond Hile on the road towards the north-east. It is the gateway to the Tinjure–Milke–Jaljale ridges, a long band of high forest rich in rhododendron species. In late March and April the hillsides turn red and pink, with white blooms higher up.
From Basantapur we walk along the forested ridge for 2 to 3 hours on a clear trail, gaining a few hundred metres, with views on clear days north to Makalu and the Kanchenjunga range. Birds such as minivets, sunbirds and laughingthrushes are common, and the small settlements along the ridge serve tea and noodles.
We return to Hile or Dhankuta for the night. Outside the flowering season the walk is still pleasant but less dramatic. The road beyond Hile can be rough in places, so we use a 4WD.
