The helicopter leaves Kathmandu at around 6:30 am, refuels at Lukla, then flies up the Dudh Koshi past Namche and Tengboche and along the Khumbu valley. After about 20–25 minutes from Lukla it lands on a flat area on the Kala Patthar ridge at around 5,550 m. You step out into thin, cold air with Everest, Nuptse and the Khumbu Icefall in front of you. The pilot keeps the rotor turning and stays in the aircraft.
Time on the ground is short, usually 10 to 15 minutes, because the human body has not acclimatised and symptoms of altitude sickness can start quickly at this height. Move slowly, do not run or climb, and get back in when the crew calls. Helicopters can carry fewer passengers at this altitude, so a full five-seat group may be split, with some guests waiting at Pheriche or Lukla while the first group lands. The crew may carry oxygen.
Landing depends on weather, wind and the rules in force. Clouds often build by 10 or 11 am, so tours leave early. If a landing on Kala Patthar is not possible, the pilot may land lower, at Gorak Shep or elsewhere, or fly past base camp without landing. Anyone with heart or lung disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, recent surgery or pregnancy should not land above 5,000 m, and young children should stay lower.

Questions travellers ask
Do Everest helicopter tours land on Kala Patthar?
Many do, on the ridge at around 5,550 m, when weather and current landing rules allow. If landing is not permitted or conditions are poor, pilots land at another point such as Gorak Shep or fly over without landing. Check current status before you travel.
How long can you stay at Kala Patthar on a heli tour?
Usually 10–15 minutes. Without acclimatisation, staying longer at about 5,500 m raises the risk of headache, nausea and dizziness. The crew decides the exact time based on how passengers feel and the weather.
Who should not land at Kala Patthar?
People with heart or lung conditions, severe high blood pressure, anaemia, recent surgery or pregnancy, and infants. They can join the tour and stay in the helicopter or wait at a lower point. Consult your doctor before booking if you have any medical condition.
