Acclimatisation walk above Kyirong

An easy guided walk of 2–3 hours on the spare day at Kyirong, gaining 200–300 m on paths through forest and barley fields above town to help the body adapt before Saga.

  • 2–3 hours
  • Morning of the rest day

The rule of high-altitude travel is to climb a little higher by day and sleep lower. On the rest day in Kyirong, the Tibetan guide leads a slow walk from town up through terraces and pine forest, gaining 200–300 m to a viewpoint over the valley, and then returns for lunch. There is no hurry; the point is gentle effort and deep breathing.

On clear mornings you look south down the gorge towards Nepal and east to snow summits. Villagers work the barley and mustard fields, and prayer flags string across the slopes above houses with carved wooden windows. The landscape feels closer to Langtang than to the Tibet of postcards, a last green interval before the dry plateau.

Wear walking shoes, take water and sun protection, and turn back if you feel a headache or unusual breathlessness. The afternoon is for rest, a hot shower, repacking for colder days and an early dinner. The next morning is a long drive up to about 4,640 m at Saga.

Questions travellers ask

Why do Kailash groups stay two nights in Kyirong?

Kyirong is at about 2,700 m and the next stop, Saga, is at about 4,640 m. A spare day with a short walk helps the body produce more red blood cells and adjust breathing before that jump. It also absorbs any delay at the border. Skipping it raises the risk of altitude sickness.

How difficult is the Kyirong acclimatisation walk?

It is easy: 2–3 hours on village paths, gaining 200–300 m at a slow pace. Anyone fit enough for the yatra can do it. Seniors may walk part of the way and rest at a viewpoint. The guide adjusts the route to the group.

What is the weather like in Kyirong?

Kyirong is milder and wetter than most of Tibet. In May, June and September days are around 15–22 °C and nights 5–10 °C. July and August bring monsoon rain that can trigger landslides on the road. Carry a rain jacket and a warm fleece.
