Parikrama day 1: Yam Dwar to Dirapuk

The first day follows the Lha Chu valley north from Yam Dwar to Dirapuk, about 12 km with a gentle climb from roughly 4,675 m to 4,900 m. Red cliffs line the valley and the north face of Kailash appears at the end of the day.

After an early breakfast in Darchen, an eco-bus takes the group about 7 km to Yam Dwar, the gateway near the Tarboche flagpole. Pilgrims touch the gate, walk through and turn north into the wide Lha Chu valley. The path is broad and mostly gentle, following the river past cliffs that Tibetans read as shapes of deities and offerings. Chhuku monastery sits high on the western slope; few groups climb to it, but it is visible from the trail.

The gain is only about 225 m over 12 km, yet the altitude makes every step slower than at home. Most pilgrims take 5–7 hours with breaks at tea tents, where you can buy noodles, sweet tea and bottled water. Ponies and horsemen join the group at Yam Dwar; many people ride for an hour or two on day one to see how they feel before the pass.

The valley bends east in the afternoon and the north face of Kailash appears, close and vertical, above Dirapuk. The guesthouses face the mountain across the river. Evening is the time for prayers and photographs, and for an early dinner of rice, dal and vegetables cooked by the group's Tibetan kitchen staff or the guesthouse. Sleep early; the alarm for day two is before 4 am.

Questions travellers ask

How hard is the first day of Kailash parikrama?

It is the easiest of the three days: about 12 km with roughly 225 m of gain, on a wide path. The difficulty is altitude, around 4,700–4,900 m, so most people walk slowly and take 5–7 hours. Pilgrims who feel weak can ride a pony from Yam Dwar and still reach Dirapuk by mid-afternoon.

Can I see Kailash's north face from Dirapuk?

Yes. Dirapuk faces the north face directly across the Lha Chu, about 3 km away, and it is the closest view of the summit on the circuit. Late afternoon and early morning usually give the clearest light. Cloud can cover the peak on some days, especially in July and August, so allow time to wait.

Is there a mobile network on parikrama day 1?

Chinese networks reach parts of the Lha Chu valley and often Dirapuk, but coverage is patchy and Indian or Nepali SIMs usually do not roam. Our groups buy a local SIM through the Tibetan guide where rules allow, and the guide carries a phone for emergencies. Do not plan to rely on data during the walk.
