Before setting off, many pilgrims climb the few steps to Zuthulpuk monastery to see the cave where Milarepa is said to have meditated, with the imprint of his hand on the rock roof. Butter lamps burn inside, and monks are usually happy for visitors to make a short round of the shrine. Then the trail follows the river south through a narrow gorge with red and grey cliffs.
The path drops gently, about 150 m over 9–10 km, and most people reach Zongdo in 3–4 hours. Mani stone walls and cairns mark the way. Ponies that carried riders on days one and two finish here, so settle the tips for horsemen and porters at Zongdo, where the guide will help you share them fairly.
From Zongdo an eco-bus covers the last few kilometres across the plain to Darchen, where the vehicle waits. Groups going home via Hilsa usually continue the same afternoon to Purang (≈ 100 km, 2–3 h), while overland groups drive on towards Saga or stay one more night in Darchen. A hot shower and a proper bed rarely felt so good.

Questions travellers ask
How long is the last day of Kailash parikrama?
About 9–10 km on foot from Zuthulpuk to Zongdo, taking 3–4 hours with a gentle descent of roughly 150 m, followed by a short eco-bus ride to Darchen. Most groups finish by noon or early afternoon and then drive on towards Purang or Saga the same day.
Is Milarepa's cave worth visiting at Zuthulpuk?
Yes, it takes only 20–30 minutes and the monastery is right beside the guesthouses. The cave is linked to Milarepa's contest with the Bon master Naro Bonchung, and pilgrims point out a handprint on the roof. Carry small notes for butter lamps and keep voices low while monks are at prayer.
How much should I tip the pony man and porter at Kailash?
Tips are customary at the end of the circuit at Zongdo. Our groups usually give each horseman or porter the equivalent of about one day's hire for the three days, paid in Chinese yuan. Your guide will suggest an amount on the day, since rates and customs shift a little each season.
