Lake Manasarovar · Temples and monasteries

Holy dip, puja and havan at Manasarovar

The central rite of the yatra: a snan in the sacred water, followed by puja or havan led by the group's pandit, and collecting Manasarovar jal to take home. Rules on bathing directly in the lake vary by season and spot.

  • 2–3 hours
  • Late morning when the sun is strongest
  • Puja materials ≈ ₹2,000–5,000 per family

We time the dip for late morning, when the sun has warmed the air to perhaps 10–15 °C in June. Where bathing in the lake is allowed, pilgrims wade in from a pebble beach, dip three times and come straight out. Where it is not, the guide fills buckets from the lake and pilgrims pour the water over themselves on the shore. Either way, have a towel, dry thermals and a windproof jacket laid out before you begin.

After the snan, the group's pandit leads puja facing Kailash. Some groups perform a short havan in a portable kund, others a Rudrabhishek with offerings brought from India. Open fire depends on wind and local regulations. Families often perform shraddha rites for ancestors here, so tell us in advance if you need a priest for a specific ceremony.

Before leaving, fill sealed bottles with lake water and pick a few smooth stones from the shore if you wish. Do not leave plastic, cloth or puja waste behind; we carry it out. Rest afterwards, warm up with tea and soup, and keep exertion low for the remaining hours.

Questions travellers ask

Is it allowed to take a holy dip in Mansarovar?

In recent seasons Tibetan authorities have restricted bathing directly in the lake at many points, while allowing pilgrims to bathe with lake water at designated places. The rule has changed more than once, so check current status before you travel. Our guide confirms the arrangement on arrival and chooses a permitted ghat.

How cold is Lake Manasarovar water?

Even in June and July the water is about 5–10 °C and the air often below 15 °C with a strong wind. A dip should last seconds, not minutes. Anyone with heart conditions or high blood pressure should take a symbolic snan with a little water poured on the head instead of entering the lake.

Can I bring Mansarovar water back to India?

Yes, pilgrims commonly carry it home. Use sealed plastic bottles or a small jerrycan in checked luggage, since cabin limits apply to liquids on flights from Kathmandu or Nepalgunj. Customs at the Nepal–Tibet border rarely object to modest amounts, but very large quantities may be questioned.
