Bandipur heritage bazaar walk

A slow walk with a local guide along Bandipur's car-free main street, from Bindebasini temple to the tundikhel, looking at Newar architecture, old trade houses, the library and temples. Ends at the viewpoint for sunset. Easy and flat, suitable for all ages.

The walk starts at Bindebasini temple, a two-tiered pagoda at the head of the bazaar with carved roof struts and a bell rung by every passing local. From here the main street runs about 500 m north along the ridge, paved with stone and lined with brick houses three and four storeys high. Your guide points out the details that mark Newar building: the latticed ankhi jhyal windows, the wooden lintels, the deep eaves and the ground-floor shopfronts with folding shutters that once sold cloth, salt and grain to caravans.

Halfway along, the Padma Library occupies one of the grander buildings, a reminder that Bandipur was an educated merchant town. Side lanes lead to small shrines of Ganesh and Narayan, to washing places fed by spring water and to courtyards where women dry chillies and grain. The guide explains how the town declined after the highway bypassed it in the 1970s and how the community chose in the 2000s to close the street to cars and restore the houses for tourism.

The walk ends at the tundikhel, the long flat ground at the end of the ridge, timed for sunset. On clear evenings the Himalaya turns orange from Dhaulagiri to Manaslu. Afterwards the bazaar fills with families, and cafes put tables on the street. Try local coffee grown on nearby farms, sel roti and a plate of Newar snacks before dinner. Our guide can also arrange a short visit to a local silk farm or a coffee grower near the bazaar on request.

Questions travellers ask

Is Bandipur bazaar suitable for wheelchairs or seniors?

The main street is flat and paved with stone, so seniors can walk it comfortably at their own pace. It is uneven in places for wheelchairs but usable with help. Side lanes and the walks to Thani Mai and Siddha Gufa involve steep steps. Many old hotels have narrow wooden stairs, so ask for a ground-floor room.

Do I need a guide for the Bandipur walk?

You can walk the bazaar on your own; it is small and safe. A guide adds the stories behind the houses, the trade history and the temples, and makes it easy to find side lanes and the library. In our packages a local guide leads the walk on the afternoon you arrive.

What should I eat in Bandipur?

Try Newar snacks such as bara (lentil patties), choila and beaten rice, local coffee grown around Bandipur, and seasonal oranges in winter. Cafes on the main street serve Nepali dal bhat and simple Indian and continental dishes. Vegetarian food is easy to find, and hotels cater for Jain diets with notice.
