Two nights is the minimum we recommend for Chitwan, and this itinerary uses every hour of it. You leave Kathmandu after breakfast, follow the Trishuli river down through the hills to Mugling and Narayangarh, and reach Sauraha by mid-afternoon in time for a village walk and sunset on the Rapti sandbank. Day two is the safari day: canoe at dawn, a walk past the Elephant Breeding Centre, and a jeep drive into the park in the afternoon light.
It is designed for first-time visitors, Indian families on a Nepal holiday, and travellers fitting Chitwan between Kathmandu and Pokhara. We use comfortable resort rooms with a pool rather than budget guesthouses, but keep costs down with the tourist bus. If you want more time in the park, a full-day jeep drive or birding at Bishazari Tal, choose our 3-night safari instead.

Day by day

DAY1
Kathmandu to Sauraha, Tharu village walk
The tourist bus leaves Kathmandu around 7 am and climbs out of the valley past Naubise before dropping into the Trishuli gorge. Rafting camps, suspension bridges and roadside fish stalls pass by until Mugling, where the road turns south to Narayangarh and the flat Chitwan valley. Our representative meets you at the Sauraha bus park around 1–2 pm for lunch at the resort. Later, a naturalist leads a walk through a Tharu village to the Rapti for sunset, and in the evening you watch the stick dance at the Tharu Culture House.
-
DAY2
Canoe, jungle walk and jeep safari
Early tea, then a 45-minute dugout canoe ride down the Rapti, watching for mugger crocodiles, kingfishers and storks, with rhinos often drinking at the bank. From the landing you walk back through riverine forest with two guides, reading tracks and stopping at the Elephant Breeding Centre at Khorsor, where we explain the welfare debate around captive elephants. After lunch, an open jeep takes you into the park for about four hours, toward Kasara and the lakes, scanning grassland and watchtowers for rhino, deer, gaur and sloth bear until dusk.
-
DAY3
Morning birding, return to Kathmandu
An optional birding walk at 6:30 am along the riverbank and buffer-zone forest turns up hornbills, drongos, bee-eaters and peafowl before breakfast. The tourist bus leaves Sauraha around 9:30 am and follows the same route back via Narayangarh and Mugling, reaching Kathmandu by about 4–5 pm. If you are heading to Pokhara instead, the Pokhara bus leaves at the same time and takes 5–6 hours via Damauli. The trip ends on arrival.

Questions about this trip
Is 2 nights enough for Chitwan?
Two nights is enough for a good first taste: a jeep safari, canoe ride, jungle walk, Tharu village and dance show. You will almost certainly see rhinos, deer and crocodiles. If you want a full-day jeep drive for better tiger odds, birding at Bishazari Tal or simply a slower pace, choose our 3-night safari.
What is the Chitwan 2 nights 3 days package cost from India?
From about ₹16,000 per person twin sharing, including the tourist bus from Kathmandu, two nights' resort stay, all meals in Chitwan, activities and SAARC park fees. Flights from India to Kathmandu are extra. Upgrading to a private car or flying to Bharatpur adds cost but saves time.
Can I start this safari from Pokhara?
Yes. Tourist buses run from Pokhara to Sauraha in 5–6 hours, leaving around 7:30 am, and the price is the same. Many guests do Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan as a loop, ending in Kathmandu. Tell us your plan and we will set the bus tickets accordingly.
Will I see a tiger on a 2-night Chitwan safari?
Possibly, but it is unlikely on a half-day jeep drive. Chitwan has around 128 tigers, and sightings have increased, but they are shy and live in thick forest. Rhinos are near certain. If a tiger is your priority, add a full-day jeep safari or extend to three nights.
Is this package suitable for children and seniors?
Yes. The jeep safari and canoe ride suit all ages, and seniors can skip the jungle walk and rest at the resort. The bus journey is long, six to seven hours, so families with young children or seniors may prefer our private-car or flight add-ons. The resort has a pool for children.
Which hotel will I stay in?
We use Green Park Chitwan in Sauraha, a resort with air-conditioned rooms, a pool and children's pool, or a similar property if it is full. You will get the hotel name with your confirmation. Upgrades to Meghauli lodges are possible but change the itinerary.
Do you include elephant rides?
No. We do not sell elephant rides or elephant bathing because of welfare concerns about how elephants are trained and kept. The jeep safari reaches the same grasslands and covers more ground. You will see the Elephant Breeding Centre on the walk, with an honest explanation of the issues.
What should I pack for a short Chitwan safari?
Neutral clothes in green, khaki or brown, a warm layer for winter mornings, a sun hat, closed shoes for the jungle walk, insect repellent, sunscreen, binoculars and a refillable bottle. Bring swimwear for the pool from March to October, and your passport or Indian voter ID for park permits.
When is the best time for this 2-night Chitwan trip?
October to April. February to April gives the best wildlife viewing after the grass is cut. December and January are cool and foggy in the mornings but still good. May and early June are hot, and from mid-June to mid-September many park tracks close for the monsoon.
