We drive to the western car park around 4 pm in winter or 5 pm in spring and autumn, which saves the climb for those who want to arrive fresh, and walk the last few minutes up to the stupa. Your guide uses the first half hour to show you the platform: the stupa's niches, the Harati temple, the stone shikharas from the reign of Pratap Malla and the small gompa where monks often chant in the late afternoon.
Then we settle on the eastern terraces. Because the hill is on the western edge of the city, the sun drops behind you and lights up the whole valley in front, from the rooftops of Thamel and the old town to the white tower of Dharahara and the Shivapuri hills along the northern rim. From October to February the air is often clear enough to see Ganesh Himal and the Langtang peaks turn pink for a few minutes before the light goes.
As the city lights come on, the butter lamps around the stupa are lit and the evening kora slowly begins, mostly local families walking clockwise after work. We walk down the east stairway in the dusk, or return to the car if you prefer, and can drop you in Thamel or at a restaurant near Durbar Square for dinner. Bring a light jacket from November to February, as the hilltop cools quickly once the sun sets.

Questions travellers ask
Is Swayambhunath good for sunset?
Yes, it is one of the best sunset spots in Kathmandu. The hill sits on the western edge of the city, so the setting sun lights the valley in front of you, and on clear winter evenings the Himalaya to the north glows pink. Arrive 45 minutes before sunset to get a good place on the eastern terraces.
Can you see the Himalaya from Swayambhunath?
On clear days, mostly from October to February, you can see Ganesh Himal and peaks of the Langtang range above the northern rim of the valley. In spring the haze usually hides them, and from June to September cloud does. The view over the city itself is good in every season except heavy rain.
Is it safe to walk down the steps after dark?
Yes, with care. The east stairway is used by locals into the evening, but the lighting is patchy and the old steps are uneven, so a phone torch helps. Our guides walk down with you, or we return to the car at the western entrance. The monkeys are calmer after dark but still curious about bags.
