We fly at first light, usually from Jomsom or Pokhara, because cloud tends to build over the high basin by mid-morning. The route crosses Kagbeni and the canyons of Upper Mustang, then turns east towards the Damodar Himal. After about 25–30 minutes from Jomsom, the helicopter lands on a flat area near the main lake at around 4,890 m. Pilots keep the rotor turning or shut down briefly depending on conditions.
Ground time is short, typically 10–15 minutes, because of the thin air and the need to keep the helicopter within safe limits. Families perform a quick puja at the shore, sprinkle the water on their heads and fill small bottles to take home. A full dip is possible but not advised for most people, given the cold and altitude. Walk slowly, do not run and stay close to the pilot and guide.
From the lakes we fly to Muktinath, landing near Ranipauwa for about an hour of darshan, then return to Jomsom or Pokhara. Payload rules limit passengers at this height, usually to 4–5, and heavier groups may be split into two shuttles. Anyone with heart or lung conditions, pregnant women and infants should not fly to Damodar Kunda.

Questions travellers ask
How much is the Damodar Kunda helicopter tour?
A full charter from Pokhara for Damodar Kunda and Muktinath typically costs around US$ 4,000–5,500 per helicopter, or about ₹75,000–95,000 per seat when shared by five. From Jomsom it costs less; from Kathmandu more. Prices vary with fuel costs and season. Check current status before you travel.
How long can we stay at Damodar Kunda by helicopter?
Usually 10–15 minutes. At about 4,890 m, the air is thin and both passengers and the helicopter are at their limits, so pilots keep landings short. That is enough for a quick puja and to collect water. Longer stays raise the risk of altitude sickness and are not allowed by most operators.
Can seniors go to Damodar Kunda by helicopter?
Fit seniors with no heart or lung problems and normal blood pressure can usually manage the short landing, but they should get a medical check first and stay calm and still on the ground. Anyone with heart disease, breathing problems or a recent illness should skip Damodar Kunda and visit Muktinath only.
