Damodar Kunda lies in a bare, high basin below the peaks of the Damodar Himal, in the far north-east of Mustang district. Sources give its altitude anywhere from about 4,890 m to 5,400 m, depending on which of the lakes is measured; we use 4,890 m for the main lake visited by pilgrims. The water is clear and icy, ringed by moraine and snow for much of the year, and the Tibetan plateau begins just beyond the ridges to the north.
In Hindu tradition the lakes are associated with Vishnu in his Damodar form, and some texts describe the area as the source of the Kali Gandaki and of Shaligram stones. Pilgrims believe a dip or even a sprinkle of water here washes away sins of many lives, and the Varaha Purana and local traditions are often cited. Many Nepali and Indian devotees combine Damodar Kunda with Muktinath, especially around Janai Purnima in August, when Nepali pilgrims trek in groups.
Reaching Damodar Kunda is serious. On foot it is a remote trek of 4–5 days from Lo Manthang through uninhabited high country, with camping and passes above 5,000 m on some routes. By helicopter it is 25–30 minutes from Jomsom, but the landing is at an altitude where oxygen is roughly half that at sea level, so time on the ground is limited to around 10–15 minutes and only fit passengers without heart or lung problems should fly.
What to see and do
- Snan or jal sprinkling at the lake
Pilgrims sprinkle or pour the lake water over their heads, and a few take a full dip. With only 10–15 minutes on a heli landing, most families collect water in a small bottle and perform puja quickly.
- Flight over Upper Mustang
The helicopter crosses the eroded canyons and red cliffs of Upper Mustang, with Annapurna, Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri behind and the Tibetan plateau ahead. Window seats on the left going north look towards Lo Manthang.
- Damodar Himal backdrop
Snow peaks of the Damodar Himal rise above the basin, and glaciers feed the lakes. In autumn the sky here is a deep, clear blue and the water reflects the peaks.
- Combined with Muktinath
Most heli itineraries pair Damodar Kunda with Muktinath darshan the same morning, landing at Muktinath for about an hour after the high lake, which allows more time where the air is thicker.
- Janai Purnima pilgrimage
Around the August full moon, groups of Nepali pilgrims trek to Damodar Kunda for Janai Purnima rites, camping on the way. It is a hard walk but the most traditional way to arrive.
Experiences in Damodar Kunda

How to reach Damodar Kunda
Helicopter
Helicopters fly Jomsom–Damodar Kunda in about 25–30 minutes, Pokhara–Damodar Kunda in about 55–60 minutes with a Jomsom refuel, and Kathmandu–Damodar Kunda in about 1.5 hours with a refuel. At around 4,890 m, payload limits mean 4–5 passengers at most, and some tours shuttle. Ground time is usually 10–15 minutes. Check current landing rules before you travel.
On foot
From Lo Manthang, treks take 4–5 days to reach the lakes via Dhi, Surkhang and the high pastures of Ghuma Thanti, camping on the way, and 3–4 days to return. Some routes cross passes near or above 5,000 m. A full Damodar Kunda trek from Kathmandu takes about 18–22 days.
Road
Jeeps reach Lo Manthang and villages such as Dhi and Yara in Upper Mustang, shortening the trek by a day or two. There is no road to the lakes themselves.
Where to stay
There is no accommodation at Damodar Kunda. Helicopter pilgrims do not stay overnight; they sleep in Jomsom, Pokhara or Kathmandu, and we use Hotel Om's Home or Shinta Mani Mustang in Jomsom when a Jomsom-based heli departure is planned. Trekkers camp near the lakes and on the approach, with full tents, kitchen and staff, and stay at Royal Mustang Resort or family lodges in Lo Manthang on the way in and out. Nights at the lakes fall to −10 °C or lower even in summer, so camping groups need four-season gear.
Tips from our trip managers
- Do not fly to Damodar Kunda if you have heart disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, severe asthma or are pregnant; the landing is near 5,000 m.
- Keep the ground time short and walk slowly; do not run to the water or carry heavy items.
- Take a small bottle for lake water and keep puja items ready before landing to make the most of 10–15 minutes.
- Fly only on clear mornings; pilots will turn back if cloud covers the basin, and refunds or rescheduling depend on the operator.
- Even a heli landing requires the Upper Mustang restricted area permit, arranged by your agency in advance.
