From Lo Manthang, the route heads south-east to Dhi on the Kali Gandaki, then climbs east to the village of Surkhang, the last permanent settlement. Beyond, the trail crosses high grazing land, where herders bring yaks in summer, to Ghuma Thanti and on to the lakes. There are no lodges: you camp with a full crew carrying tents, food and fuel on horses or mules.
Days are 5–7 hours of walking with steep climbs and passes around or above 5,000 m on some routes. Acclimatisation is essential: plan at least two nights in Lo Manthang first and rest days on the way. Weather can change quickly, with snow possible even in August. The reward is a pilgrimage in near-total solitude, with the lakes reached on foot as tradition intended.
Most groups go in July and August, when snow has melted from the high pastures and Nepali pilgrims gather for Janai Purnima, or in early autumn. The trek needs the Upper Mustang restricted area permit for every day you are inside the area, which adds up on a long itinerary. Insurance covering helicopter evacuation from 5,500 m is mandatory.

Questions travellers ask
How many days is the Damodar Kunda trek?
From Lo Manthang, allow 8–10 days return, including rest days. A full itinerary from Kathmandu with flights to Jomsom, the Upper Mustang approach and the return usually takes 18–22 days. Some groups shorten it by driving to Dhi or Yara by jeep and flying back by helicopter.
Is the Damodar Kunda trek difficult?
Yes, it is strenuous. It involves remote camping, long days, passes near or above 5,000 m and no facilities or rescue nearby other than helicopter. You need excellent fitness, prior high-altitude trekking experience and a strong support team. It is not suitable for first-time trekkers or anyone with health concerns.
What does the Damodar Kunda trek cost?
A full camping trek of 18–22 days from Kathmandu costs from about US$ 3,500 per person in a small group, more for private trips, mainly because of the Upper Mustang permit fee per day, camping crew and pack animals. Check current permit fees before you travel.
