The trail around the western side of Phoksundo is the famous route towards Shey Gompa and Upper Dolpo, shown in the film Himalaya when a yak caravan edges along the cliff. It is cut into the rock face, with stretches supported by wooden beams and stone, and in places drops sharply to the water. We walk only the first section, to viewpoints that look down the full length of the lake.
From Ringmo the path crosses the outflow and climbs steadily along the shore, gaining about 300–400 m over 2 hours. From the high points, the lake spreads out below in shades of turquoise and blue, Ringmo's roofs are tiny on the far shore and the peaks of Kanjiroba rise to the south-west. Lammergeiers and griffons often circle at eye level.
This is a moderate hike with exposure, so it is not suitable for anyone uneasy with heights or for young children. Your guide decides how far to go based on conditions and the group. On the way back you can stop at the waterfall viewpoint. It makes an excellent acclimatisation walk on the rest day at Phoksundo.

Is the Phoksundo cliff trail dangerous?
The first part used by day hikers is narrow and exposed in places but well trodden, and safe with care and a guide. Further along towards Upper Dolpo it becomes more precarious, especially when wet or icy. People with vertigo or poor balance should avoid it, and children should not go without close supervision.
Which film was shot at Phoksundo Lake?
Himalaya, released in 1999 and directed by Éric Valli, was filmed in Dolpo with local actors, including scenes on the cliff trail above Phoksundo. Also known as Caravan, it was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and brought Dolpo to international attention.
Can I trek from Phoksundo to Upper Dolpo?
Yes, the western shore trail leads to the Kang La (about 5,360 m) and Shey Gompa in Upper Dolpo. This needs the Upper Dolpo restricted area permit (US$ 500 for 10 days), full camping and a strong team. It is a separate, much harder expedition. Check current status before you travel.
