August is much like July: the plateau is mild and fairly dry while the Nepal side is wet. Many Indian groups travel during Shravan, the month sacred to Shiva. In August 2026 floods closed the Rasuwagadhi–Kyirong crossing again, so overland yatras moved to the Simikot and Lhasa routes; check current status before you travel. In Lhasa, Shoton opens with a giant thangka unveiled at Drepung Monastery, usually in August, followed by Tibetan opera in the Norbulingka.
